Session #59 - Poker Stars Update

Whelp, I haven't had much luck at Poker Stars since my last online post. I would go a couple of days doing real well at the SNG's and then a few days of real crappy play. I still think my SNG style of play is pretty solid, but some tweaking is needed, mostly in the area of dealing with aggressive players when I'm holding less than stellar hands. I tend to push too much and it costs me chips. A little more focused and I should see the win percentage creep up.

I've cashed out a fair chunk of my online money and in the past couple of weeks have seen my stack decrease to zero dollars so the online play is suspended for me until the affiliate revenue kicks in by week's end. The session total below reflects my total swing since my last online post.

Session #58 - Rockin' It Out at The Rock

So my work took me to Vancouver on Thursday and I managed to stop in at the River Rock Casino Resort which has a huge 25 table poker room. What a great atmosphere they have there. Food and drinks at the table. Pop and tap water is free if you like, but everything else you pay for. There was a couple of models wandering around in those Vegas outfits so there was some pleasant eye candy wandering around.

Two things that were very different that caught me off guard was the fact that you can't "buy the button". This happens when you miss the big blind due to being away from the table but return in time for the small blind then you can post both blinds and continue playing. They don't do this at River Rock, they force you to wait until the button has passed and then you're still forced to post the blinds. Kinda dumb in my opinion. The other was the fact that you have to post a blind when you first sit down at a table. I figure this is the norm but not something I've had to do in some time.

I had a great table image going as my bluffs were not called and my big hands were. I missed the first few hands and had to rebuy $40 to top off my stack but then I went on a run where my stack was topped out at $450. I got involved in a couple of big hands that didn't work out and at one point tried to push a guy out of a $50 pot with AJ suited with a nut flush draw on the flop but he called with top pair and the flush never realized. That one hurt the stack a bit.

I also bumped into one of the guys from the clubhouse and he introduced me to another long-time poker player from Victoria.

In the end it was a satisfying experience and I walked away with a decent amount of cashola.

Session #57 - Pinky and the Lack of a Brain

So about early afternoon I stop into the clubhouse for a little texas hold 'em poker action and I'm greeted by the usual suspects. Street's there getting cracked by BikerBoy as usual. The table banter is unusually high today and it even escalated to the point where the houseman had to step in and warn people as well as sit one guy out for ten minutes after Street told BikerBoy "Fuck You" in response to BikerBoy calling him a piece of shit. I just about fell out of my chair!

I had it out with Pinky after one hand that really pissed me off. Pinky's sitting in the small blind, BikerBoy is UTG, Old-Not-Deaf-Guy is UTG+1 and I'm UTG+3 sitting on KJ suited. Now I make it two bets to go and it gets capped and I call as I now have the button. The flop comes down 5-6-k and BikerBoy bets out and I make it two bets and everyone calls. The turn is a Jack so I'm now looking at two pair and it's checked to me and I bet and everyone calls and Pinky is all-in. The river is a 5 and it's checked to me and I bet, everyone calls but Old-Not-Deaf-Guy is humming and hawing and then Pinky does something that sent me through the roof. I absolutely HATE when players act in an immature non-professional manner and this one took the cake. He set his cards down, seperated one and held it out ready to flip over. It was so blatantly obvious he had a five for trip fives but what he was doing was complete and utter bullshit. He was influencing the play when he had no call to do so. He was only in for the main pot and we were still fighting over the side pot. Old-Not-Deaf-Guy saw his play and folded his hand which cost me one big bet.

I fucking lost it on him and called him out on his immature, non-professional attitude and he got all defensive and Grade Two blustery like he usually does. This guy is a classless piece of shit and I love riding him on his crap because he couldn't defend himself from a parking ticket, let alone his crappy table manners. If he got hit by the onion truck I would be first to call the Darwin Awards people.

As for my play for the day, I had awesome cards early on that got run down hard. I mean top pair top kicker getting tripped up on the river. Flopped sets getting beat by bigger flopped sets. My two pair getting spanked by a gutshot straight made on the end. It was un-real. I finally moved into Street's seat after he got cracked out of the game because history has told me his seat catches fire for some reason after he leaves and sure enough I went on a $400 run and made back everything I had lost up to that point plus $100. I stayed pretty much even for awhile and managed to leave on the plus side.

Session #56 - Somedays you're the pigeon. Somedays you're the statue.

Today I might as well have been carved by Michelangelo himself. First hand I played was about five hands into the start of the Saturday $1/$2 no-limit game at the clubhouse. I'm looking at pocket aces on the button. UTG raises to $8, middle position calls, I raise to $16, UTG calls and middle positions maxes it out to the club rule of $25 max pre-flop. The flop comes down 4c-Th-Jh. UTG bets out $20, middle position moves all-in and has both of us covered. I call with my rockets hoping he has AJ suited (turns out he has the other two aces, so neither of our hands can really improve) and UTG cals with K-J suited. Well, by now I'm sure you've guessed what the turn is right? Yeah, that's it.... a jack. UTG busts us with trips on the turn. I'm not sure how he made that call but he is a pretty loose player so chalk it up to him getting lucky.

Unfortunately, that was just the start of my day as I ran into shitty hand after shitty hand. Sets getting busted by bigger sets. People making their chased card on the river on me. It was surreal how bad it was. I took a real beating today.

Final hand saw me with $14 left and AK suited in UTG + 2. Old deaf guy calls me with KK and no ace falls. I'd been beat up more than enough so I packed it in for the day, and probably the week. Maybe even longer.

Session #55 - Busted With My Hand In The Cookie Jar

I had a pretty damn good session today. Got to the clubhouse at just after 11:00 am and there was already a game in play. I sat down and won my first hand with K-10 after flopping a set of tens with two callers all the way to the end. I was off to a great start. Two hands later I hit a set of jacks which held up again. About four hands after that I hit a set of threes which held up. I was already up $80 and ready for more. Within the next dozen hands I flopped the nut flush.... twice! Got paid off for one of them.

The hand of the day for me, however, was not one in which I ended up stacking the chips at the end. I was sitting on the button with 7-8 suited and flopped a flush draw with A-K-K on board. The turn and river were inconsequential but I was betting on the come and I made a continuation bet on the river when all four other players checked to me. All folded except for Tess who I think called me down just to see what I had but the bugger had jack high which beat my no-pair flush draw! Ack! Hand in the cookie jar indeed. He was pretty proud of himself after that showdown. Next hand I made a flush on the turn and bet it hard all the way and had BikerBoy calling me (maybe thought I was on tilt?), so I made back everything from the previous hand and then some.

Jack high!!!

Session #54 - Full Value Gutshot

So I showed up at the clubhouse today around 2:30 and sat down to the daytime $3/$6 limit game with the full intention of checking all the way to 5:00 when the no-limit game would start. The height of the $3/$6 game was when I flopped trips holding AJ offsuit and the flop came 6-J-J and the turn tightened me up with a six and I was heads up on a side pot since the third player was all-in. I had everyone beat but the river was the case jack which gave me the high hand for the time period (the clubhouse pays out to the high hand for every five hour period) with only 5 minutes left to go in this particular five hour slot. And I did it in style by beating the previous high hand of J-J-J-J-Q, beating his kicker by two cards! You should have heard him grown! Lol!

So I head into the NL switchover $60 up and had to take down my stack to $100, as everyone did, since the max buy-in to the no-limit game was $100. I flopped a couple of big draws which didn't pan out and when I decided to make a semi-bluff move against one of the older guys in the club he called me with JJ and neither my flush draw, nor ace hit and I was forced to rebuy.

The hand of the night for me came in the form of JQ suited on the button and it was made $10 to go before the flop and there was me, bikerboy in 1st position loose aggressive and a mid-position loose passive/aggressive. The flop comes down 8-9-4 and bikerboy bets $6 and we both call. The turn hits me right in the gut with a 10 and bikerboy bets $20, middle calls and I raise all-in for $60 more. After much humming and hawing, bikerboy calls. After even much more humming and hawing, middle spot throws away his 77 (too bad!) and the river makes a flush on board but bikerboy doesn't have it (I never did see his hand, he got away without showing it) and I zoom up to $200+ in chips.

I pumped a bit off before I left but it was getting late for me and I was forced to go.

Session #53 - SNG Mania

So I had a marathon session of sit-n-go's on Poker Stars today. Four in total. The first one was a $15 + $1 NL SNG which I ended up winning for a first place prize of $67.50.

At the same time I was playing a $16 + $1 double shootout to Sunday WSOP qualifier which I finished 16th after going all-in KK vs JT to get sucked out by two pair. I also lost a $10 + $1 NL double shootout qualifier to the Sunday $1 million guaranteed. Had a real lousy run of cards on that one.

The final one I played was a $10 + $1 2-Table NL SNG which got off to a great start with an early hand with me holding AJ over KJ which I slow played for value after a flop of 4-J-4, giving me an early chip lead. I ended up going heads up against a very rude player who I let beat me a few times to give him a sense of domination and then spanked him nicely. I nearly overtook him for chip lead when I held A8 and the flop comes down 4-8-4 and he slow played his A-4 and let me spike an 8 on the turn. I finally lost to him when he put me all in with 2-5 spades vs my pocket jacks after a 9-8-2 flop and he went runner runner 67 to hit bottom straight. I took 2nd for $54.

Final tally was four tournies totalling $55 of entry with two money finishes totalling $121.50 for a profit of $66.50.

Session #52 - OMAHA!!!!

Well, normally an $8 win wouldn't be much to talk about but this was a $20 + $2 Omaha hi-lo split tourney that I entered myself into on Poker Stars this evening and I had to write it up because I was actually quite happy with how I did. For almost the entire length of the tournament, I hung in there with a short stack of chips. I played a very tight conservative game with occassional step-outs to steal blinds and a couple of well-timed bluffs. With around 40 players left I was able to make a move at the right time and got myself up into the #9 position in chips which was as far as I would get chip-wise.

There were two hands that I regret not getting involved in that could have given me the impetus I needed but looking back, I still like my reasonings for folding out of both hands. If I had been right, I would have been out of the tournament.

The first hand had me in 2nd-to-last position with JJ44 with around 2500 in chips. The blinds were at 400/800 and I was going to go all-in and steal the blinds with a small blanket of security with two made pairs to back me up. However, it got called and raised so I folded out. If I had called I would have flopped a set of fours and eventually taken down the pot (around 8000 chips). But if you think about it, with a cold caller and a raiser I had no choice but to get out without any low potential to my hand.

The other hand I folded out of had me with A9xx and the flop came down KK9 and it got checked around with three of us in the pot, me on the button. The river is a four or something and small blind bets and the other guy calls. Now I stopped and thought about this for a minute. With second pair, top kicker I would have called the small blind but the middle caller gave me pause to consider. Did he have a king? Did he have an overpair in his hand? Again, if I had called I would have been crippled so I erred on the side of caution and folded. Eventually, a J9 took down the hand so I would have had him outkicked and had a substantial chip stack.

But in the end, I was very happy with my performance and with my 21st place finish out of a pool of 216 entrants I can hold my head high.

Here's the obligatory congrats email from Poker Stars:

Session #51 - 2-Table Sit-N-Go on Poker Stars

Played a 2-Table SNG on Stars this afternoon. Did very well getting chip lead by final ten and never looking back all the way to first place. I haven't posted much about my online playing since my multi-tournament win mostly because my play hasn't resulted in much of a plus or minus swing. Albeit, last night I came in 2nd in another 2-Table SNG as well as 17th in a low $3 multi NL game but they kind of blend into the above mentioned stagnant stack swing.

Here's my congrats email from Poker Stars about today's SNG:

Session #49 and #50 - Catching up......... again.

Man, I've been really busy with work and what-not lately. My wife's aunt and uncle are building a house on the shores of a local lake and I've been enlisted to help paint it so when I'm not working my regular job, my other regular job, my side job or playing poker, I'm out there painting my ass off. I have had a couple of sessions, both unfortunately losing ones, but I can't recall enough detail to write eloquently enough about them. I do recall the one day (Session #49) that I lost $240, on the very first hand I flopped top two but was chased down to the river betting all the way and lost out to Flushmaster who spiked it on the end (bastard!).

Session #50 saw me up $80 at one point but those monster pots I love to get involved in didn't pan out for me and I ended up losing $140.

Session #48 - $3/$6 Hell

Gawd almighty I hate the $3/$6 limit game at the clubhouse sometimes. At that low of a limit you just can't chase people out and you get rundown all the time. For example, I come into a hand with AK and the flop is A-rag-rag and I bet and get three callers. The turn is a nine, I bet and get one caller. The river is another nine, I bet and get raised and buddy turns over K-9. WTF did he have on the flop?? Amateur play at its best and it gets rewarded. I like the guy too and I've given him breaks before and he raises me on the river with that runner-runner crap? No more breaks again.... ever.

Session #47 - Fighting For a Seat at the World Series of Poker Main Event!!!

Oh man, I'm so stoked!! I just finished in the top 3 of a 250 person $3 + Unlimited Rebuys and one add-on tournament on Poker Stars to win a seat in the Sunday World Series Main Event Qualifier!!! I win that and baby, I'm off to Vegas in July to compete for an estimated $10 million US first place prize. About 3/4 of the way through the tournament I took the chip lead with some bold plays, well-timed bluffs and a bit of luck and never looked back. I had one scare late in the tournament where I called trip nines with my top pair and knocked off 2/3 of my stack but I persevered and eventually knocked out bubble boy when we went all-in preflop with my AQ suited vs his 10-K offsuit and nothing hit to help either and I took it down with high card ace.

The following is a copy/paste of the hand that I think swayed the whole tournament in my favour. It was a pretty ballsy call on my part but I just couldn't put the guy on top pair which made me the best so I had to call. If I hadn't of called, I would have taken a big hit to my stack. Instead, it catapulted me to the top.

Session #46 - You Get the Meat Tray!

Went and played for the afternoon today. From 12 bells right up until 3:00. I was doing pretty good at one point, had my stack up to $280 from a $100 buy-in but I ran into a couple of big pot hands that didn't pan out.

One hand that earlier led me to my initial big stack was me sitting on the button with Kd-10d and it got capped pre-flop with six in the hand. I had a backdoor flush draw with 2nd pair so I stayed in for another capped round that saw four to the turn. The turn was a diamond rag which I'm sure didn't help anyone but gave me the 2nd nut flush draw. Two big bets with all four in and the river is a diamond. There's a straight flush possible on the board but it got checked around to me on the button with a heavy sigh from the aggressor and a muttered "you gotta be fucking kidding me" when I bet out so I knew I was golden and sure enough I get two payoffs and I raked a sweet pot.

The funniest hand of the night came with me in second-to-last position with 9d-10d and the flop comes down Qd-Jd-x and I flopped an open-ended straight flush draw. I call one bet and then smooth call a raise and re-raise and the turn is the beautiful miracle card 8d giving me the stone cold nuts. I smooth call again because I want the trailer to stay in since the better was short stacked. The river is meaningless and the short stack bets his last dollar which gives me the chance to raise the trailer and he calls with his trips. The funny part of it is as I'm laying my cards out I yell over my shoulder to another player that he wins the meat tray. The owner had these deli meat and cheese trays that he was giving away to whoever held the high hand with quads or better and got beat.

You had to be there but it was pretty funny.

Session #45 - A Winning Note to Start the Month

Well, today went exactly how you like to picture a perfect low-limit game of hold 'em would like to go. I was in seat two with three tight players to my left, two weak players to my right and two extremely loose players across the table. Perfect conditions for raking pots with top or even second pair and when you have a made hand like a tight or a flush it was golden. In a matter of two hours I raked in over $300. I don't have time for a long post but suffice it to say it was a good session to start the month with.

A New Template

So a few people complained to me about the difficulty in reading the white text on a dark background so I changed the template for my blog. Hope you like the new look!

Session #44 - A Losing Note to End the Month

Well, after having a semi-strong month I end it on a whopper of a losing session. I can't fault my play too much. I thought I played good but just didn't get lucky on the three or four monster pots I got involved in which hit me right where it hurts.

I'll give my final hand as an example of the luck I was having. I'm holding pocket deuces in mid-postion and am able to limp in for one bet. The flop comes 7-7-4 and it's checked around. The turn is a deuce which gives me a nice little full house right?

Wrong.

The guy behind me bets out and I raise and it folds around to buddy who starts yammering "It was raised? Who raised it? It was raised?" and on and on. And I thought, oh crap, I'm doomed. My full house just got trapped by pocket fours or the miracle flop for quads. I'm short stacked with only $4 left so of course I call his re-raise. He turns over pocket 7's for quads. My only hope is for the case duck to hit the river and I would get paid out the bad beat jackpot but it doesn't come and I'm busted.

Typical of my day it was.

Session #43 - A Different Kind of Poker

So Thursday I was in Vancouver for work and I had an hour to kill before I caught the ferry back to Victoria and figured I would stop in at the River Rock Casino for some quick action. Surprise, surprise they were operating at less than full capacity (they have 25 tables and 10 were empty) probably because they didn't schedule the staff to cover them and hence there was a 20 deep waiting list. No poker for me.

So I went downstairs and played a half hour of four card poker. I don't usually play casino table games because there is zero chance you can win over the long run but I was bored. Four Card Poker is where you get five cards and the dealer gets six and you each have to make your best four card poker hand. That sixth card gives the house a MASSIVE edge but I ended up getting pretty lucky. I made several straights and one flush and I was betting $10 on the bonus button so I got 6-to-1 and 7-to-1 on my bonus several times and in half an hour ended up taking $150 off the table.

Session Total = +$150.
